What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a detailed systems-based evaluation of each individual, taking into account their personal life history, environment, genetics, in order to find and address the threads or roots of their symptoms.

For Integrative Cardiovascular Consulting see below.

Is Functional Medicine for me?

Some patients come to functional medicine because their chronic symptoms have not been relieved or even acknowledged under conventional care. Others have been engaged for some time in seeking answers to their health challenges, and have a natural affinity for the detailed work and personalization that we do. Functional Medicine is not suitable for emergency care or surgical issues, or for most cancer care.

“I came to Hudson Valley Functional medicine with years of pain, undiagnosed symptoms, frustrations with traditional medicine and desperate for answers…

With the help of Dr. Leventhal, I went from living with debilitating symptoms to now living a vibrant life…and I can with confidence say that I am fully healed today!”

How does Functional Medicine work?

Initial Visit

  • 1

    Review

We start with a comprehensive review of your medical history including where you have lived, environmental exposures, work and family life, and any medical challenges.

  • 2

    Exams

We do a physical exam and bioimpedance measurement, as well as waist and hip measurements in the office to get a reading on where you are structurally (% fat, muscle, water).

  • 3

    Goals

We review your personal goals and preferences

  • 4

    Next steps

From that visit we construct in partnership with you, the types of assessments or labs that we need in order to understand the underlying causes of your medical issues or conditions. We may initiate some dietary and lifestyle changes right away.

Second Visit

  • 1

    Review

We go over the assessments, lab results and any changes noticed.

  • 2

    Wellness plan

We outline a “wellness and treatment plan” that begins the process of healing using all the tools that you are comfortable with. This might include plans for diet, supplements, physical exercise, and sleep, along with recommendations for a mind-body practice.

Follow-up Visits

  • 1

    Adjust

In some cases we adjust plans and may recommend other modalities that are offered by nearby providers, in conjunction with our work.

  • 2

    Referrals

Some patients might benefit from referrals: physical therapy, cranial-cervical (neck) evaluation, neurofeedback, myofascial work, or health coaching, all of which we have providers that we have vetted.

  • 3

    Ongoing care

Ongoing visits are scheduled as needed. Patients requiring more interventions might come monthly. Others who are progressing well might not need to come back for six months, if at all.

  • 4

    Regular care

Your regular medical care (primary care, urology or gynecology or other specialists) might continue in tandem to the work we’re doing, We do not replace that service but we can share notes, labs, or anything else that you request with your primary care doctor.

Integrative Cardiovascular Consult

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. We are fortunate to have Dr. Norbert Rainford, a board-certified AND functional medicine trained cardiologist available on Fridays for patients who would like a more intensive Cardiovascular evaluation.

Our comprehensive cardiovascular examination goes well beyond the standard diagnostic approach. We combine the most modern concepts of traditional cardiology with the refreshing perspective that functional medicine provides. We assess the entire clinical presentation and we utilize tools such as the cutting edge multifunctional cardiogram and central aortic blood pressure to assess the underlying causes and drivers of the patient’s illnesses. The emphasis is on early detection of coronary artery disease and the design of the appropriate lifestyle intervention.

These visits are scheduled separately through Dr. Rainford’s office at 845-639-8240.
